Brendan WalterLorde‘s debut album Pure Heroine was hailed as a game-changing project that wasn’t just a huge hit: it was hugely influential as well, in terms of the musical landscape.  But with her new album, Melodrama, Lorde says she’s not trying to recreate that magic.

The singer tells Rolling Stone that with Pure Heroine, “we reinvented the wheel by accident.”  Now, she says, “That’s not the thing I was put on this Earth to do — to push things forward every time.”

She adds, “Obviously I would want people to like the music, but in terms of being like Drake, how he’s always pushing the culture forward musically? I know what my strengths are, and I think that would have given me a hernia or something.”

These days, Lorde says, she doesn’t even listen to Pure Heroine.  “That felt like a kid,” she tells Rolling Stone. As for Melodrama, she says, “This feels like a young woman. I can feel the difference.”

Lorde also tells Rolling Stone that one day, she wants to get her driver’s license, have kids and go back to school.  But for now, she says, “I don’t know if I’m a pop star for a reason, but I do think that I should be here, I think that I should be doing this.”
