Lorde impersonator fools fans in New Zealand, Lorde calls it “deeply fake news”

Brendan WalterFans in Auckland, New Zealand who thought their local celebrity Lorde had dropped by a low-key dance party Monday night were disappointed to hear they’d been fooled by an imposter.

According to the New Zealand Herald, the dance party bills itself as “a weekly hour of dance freedom in total darkness.”  The “total darkness” part is the key: fans were told that there was to be a “special guest,” but evidently, the person — who performed Lorde’s “Green Light” — was heard but not seen. Still, she was convincing enough for several fans to tweet their thanks to Lorde for a great performance.

That’s why Lorde’s mom took to Twitter to confirm that she and Lorde were actually in London, and the singer herself posted a photo of herself in London, eating a Cadbury creme egg.  She also wrote on Twitter, “this is deeply fake news but quite cute lol.”

The dance party organizer later admitted on Facebook that “Lorde” was actually Hannah Horsfield, an Auckland music student.
