Liam Payne says fatherhood is “the most magical thing I’ve done”

ABC/Heidi GutmanNot long after Liam Payne became a father for the first time, he hit the road to promote his new solo career.  While Liam says being away from his son Bear is difficult, he knows that his partner, British entertainer Cheryl Cole, is more than up to the task of keeping the home fires burning.

“You know what? I’ve got an extremely supportive missus,” Liam tells ABC Radio of Cheryl. “She’s the best mum in the world and she’s incredible at what she does.  And I’ve said it before, but every minute of her day goes into that boy, and it’s incredible to watch.”

Liam has been criss-crossing the globe promoting not one, but two hit singles: “Strip That Down” and his Zedd collaboration, “Get Low.”  While not being there to witness every moment of Bear’s young life isn’t ideal, he makes do.

“I know he’s home safe…[and] you might miss out on the first word or the first giggle or the first smile,” he explains.  “But…[Cheryl’s] always…sending me different videos and I FaceTime every day, and we always check in and make sure everything’s OK.”

“I mean, I love my son to pieces,” says Liam of Bear, who was born March 22. “It’s been the most magical thing I’ve done the whole entire time…and I’ve got to do some pretty crazy things in life!”

Despite his solo success, Liam hasn’t forgotten why he got to do those crazy things.  On September 4 — the anniversary of the day One Direction was put together on the British version of X Factor — he posted a heartfelt message.

He wrote, “To my four band mates and brothers thank you so much along with all of our fans. We really are ‘the greatest team the world has ever seen.'”
