Katy Perry says she was “heartbroken” over public’s response to “Witness”

ABC/Craig SjodinIn a new interview with Vogue Australia, Katy Perry opens up about heartbreak — but not of the romantic kind.

She tells the mag she was left heartbroken last year when people didn’t respond to her album Witness the way she expected them to.

“I have had bouts of situational depression and my heart was broken last year because, unknowingly, I put so much validity in the reaction of the public, and the public didn’t react in the way I had expected to … which broke my heart,” she explains.

She says she believes the lackluster success of Witness, as compared to her previous releases, was the universe’s way of testing her.

“Music is my first love and I think it was the universe saying: ‘Okay, you speak all of this language about self-love and authenticity, but we are going to put you through another test and take away any kind of validating ‘blankie,’” she says. “’Then we’ll see how much you do truly love yourself.’”

Katy has since undergone a mental reboot of sorts, even attending a week-long personal growth retreat in California. One thing she learned? You don’t have to be in pain to be creative.

“I was with someone recently who asked: ‘Well, don’t you think that if you do too much therapy it will take away your artistic process?’” she says. “And I told them: ‘The biggest lie that we’ve ever been sold is that we as artists have to stay in pain to create.’”

Katy is currently on her Witness world tour, which wraps in Australia in August.
