Kate del Castillo on Sean Penn’s participation in El Chapo doc: “Sorry, Sean. Too late.”

Netflix(NEW YORK) — Mexican actress Kate del Castillo is ready to share her side of the story in the new three-part Netflix docu-series, The Day I Met El Chapo.

The series explores the details of the secret 2015 meeting that the actress arranged between the now-imprisoned drug lord Joaquin Guzman, aka El Chapo, and Sean Penn.

Del Castillo says she won’t be changing the documentary or delaying its release, despite recent objections by Penn.

“Netflix knows how to do documentaries so you have to ask of course Sean Penn, you have to bring him along, and they reached out to him several times and he ignored their requests,” del Castillo says.

She says that Penn demanded to see the three episodes only after they were completed and “now he wants to be a part of it and not in a very nice way.”

“Sorry, Sean,” she says. “Too late.”

Penn’s spokesperson said in a statement to Variety earlier this month that “there are profound inaccuracies and presumptions presented in Kate’s story.”

Del Castillo says she welcomes Penn to make his own documentary on the subject.

When asked if she feels she was treated unfairly as compared to Penn, del Castillo becomes impassioned.

“Absolutely,” she says. “Only with the charges, I was the only one charged. Not him, not the producers, only me.”

She continues, “And I’m an actress. I live out of my image, my name, that’s what we do – and they destroyed that. Not Sean. Sean’s still out there and he’s a millionaire, you know? I’m not. And I’m almost broke because I’ve been paying for lawyers for two years. Lawyers in the United States and Mexico.”

The Day I Met El Chapo debuts on Netflix today.
