“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” three-peats with $20 million weekend; “12 Strong” strong in debut

Frank Masi – ©2016 CTMG/Sony Pictures Entertainment(LOS ANGELES) — Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle reigned supreme at the box office for the third straight week, delivering an estimated $20 million weekend. That brings its total earnings stateside to more $315 million, surpassing the 2012 James Bond thriller Skyfall as Sony’s highest-grossing film.

Internationally, the fantasy action film added $36.2 million, bringing its worldwide total to $767.8 million.

12 Strong, the new war drama starring Chris Hemsworth, posted a strong finish, taking second place with an estimated $16.5 million.

Another of the week’s new entries, the Gerard Butler-led Den of Thieves also had a solid debut, collecting an estimated $15.3 million, for a third place finish. The Post bowed in fourth place with an estimated $12.1 million weekend.

Rounding out the top five was The Greatest Showman, earning an estimated $11 million.

Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, in sixth place, tacked an estimated $6.5 million to its domestic earnings, pushing it past the $600 million mark — just the sixth film to accomplish that. Worldwide, The Last Jedi‘s total earnings rose to around $1.296 billion, passing Disney’s Frozen to become the ninth largest worldwide release ever. Lucasfilm, like ABC, is owned by Disney.
