Catie LaffoonIn addition to making her own hits, Julia Michaels has collaborated with some other hitmakers on a few songs released this year. She co-wrote Anne-Marie’s hit “2002” with Ed Sheeran and co-wrote two songs on Shawn Mendes’ new album, “Nervous” and “Like to Be You.”

She tells Billboard that Shawn and Ed have different energies in the studio. Julia says Shawn has a quirky habit of leaving water bottles all around the studio, but she was impressed by his overall enthusiasm.

“I remember waking up the next day and actually being kind of depressed because the session was so energetic and lively, and he was just so excited about so much,” she says. “I feel like it’s kind of rare when someone is that excited. He has so many ideas and just wants to do song after song after song.”

As for Ed, she says songwriting with him is a whirlwind.

“For him, it’s very much his own thing,” she says. “It’s his words, his mind, and you’re just kind of there in his universe. It’s so crazy because it happens so fast. It’s like, boom, song’s done, and you’re like, ‘How did that just happen?’ I don’t know how he does it.”

She adds, “He’s one of the few artists that I know that can write consistently, like five songs in a row, that are hits.”

Julia rejoins Maroon 5 for their Red Pill Blues tour in September.
