Harry Styles covers “Rolling Stone,” talks Taylor, “Sign of the Times” and new music

Theo Wenner for Rolling StoneHarry Styles covers the new issue of Rolling Stone, and opens up inside about moving beyond One Direction musically — and, of course, his famous former girlfriend.

Harry tells the magazine he’s aware there are at least two Taylor Swift songs — “Style” and “Out of the Woods” — that were supposedly inspired by him, and he admires them both.

“I’m lucky if everything [we went through] helped create those songs,” Harry says. “That’s what hits your heart.”

Asked what he’d say to Taylor today, Harry says he’d express his gratitude to her for writing those songs.

“Certain things don’t work out,” he says. “…[but] I like tipping a hat to the time together. You’re celebrating the fact it was powerful and made you feel something…you shared something. Meeting someone new, sharing those experiences, it’s the best s**t ever. So thank you.”

Harry also says his new hit “Sign of the Times” reflects how this moment in time isn’t the first time things have been hard, and it won’t be the last.

“The song is written from a point of view as if a mother was giving birth to a child,” he explains, “and there’s a complication. The mother is told, ‘The child is fine, but you’re not going to make it.’ The mother has five minutes to tell the child, ‘Go forth and conquer.'”

“The number-one thing was I wanted to be honest,” Harry says. “I hadn’t done that before.”

Regarding his decision to explore a solo career, he adds, “I wanted to step up…Every decision I’ve made since I was 16 was made in a democracy. I felt like it was time to make a decision about the future. ”
