ABC/Derek Johnson(NEW YORK) — After numerous medical emergencies, doctor hook-ups and break-ups, and devastating character deaths, Grey’s Anatomy is marking a very special milestone.  The show is celebrating its 300th episode tonight on ABC.

According to star Ellen Pompeo — who’s been leading the show as Dr. Meredith Grey for 14 seasons, since its debut March 27, 2005 — fans can expect the episode to be “classic Grey’s.”

“We pay homage to every character that’s walked through the doors, all of the cast members that we love and miss,” she says. “And they did it in a really cool way so I think the audience is gonna like it because it’s funny and heartfelt.”

Chandra Wilson, who plays Dr. Miranda Bailey, promises it will contain “throwback” elements, particularly when it comes to music on the show.

“We historically have always carried the past with us season after season,” Wilson says. “We don’t ever close the door on whatever has happened before. We appreciate everything that came before is what got us here today and it’s the same thing that our characters are experiencing.”

Hitting 300 episodes has also allowed the cast to look back on the impact the show has had over the years. Pompeo says that she’s witnessed the show empower mothers to take a more active role in their children’s medical care. And Justin Chambers, who plays Dr. Alex Karev, says the show has even inspired people to go into the medical field.

“We’ve been on so long, there are young people that are now in medicine for college,” he says. “And to know that we’ve had an effect on their lives and inspired them to become medical [professionals]…that keeps us rollin’.”

Grey’s Anatomy‘s 300th episode airs tonight at 8:00 ET/7:00 CT on ABC.
