ABC/Matt BrownNow that news of Fergie’s split from husband Josh Duhamel is no longer a secret, the singer says she’s happy she doesn’t have to pretend anymore.

Fergie tells People magazine it’s been difficult trying to promote her new album, Double Dutchess, when interviewers kept asking her about her marriage. “Honestly, it was just getting a little weird for us with all the romantic questions,” she explained.

“We’re great friends, we love each other so much, and it just got to the point where it was getting a little weird…there’s no perfect time so we just decided to [announce it].”

Fergie stresses that she and Josh have no issue with co-parenting their son, Axl, adding, “[His school] has helped…we have a co-op so Josh and I would walk there several times before the school season. So I get to learn from the teachers and see how he reacts in a group of friends that he knows.”

Fergie and Josh were married for eight years before they announced their split last week, in a statement reading, “With absolute love and respect we decided to separate as a couple earlier this year…We are and will always be united in our support of each other and our family.”

A source tells People that the couple had been “leading separate lives for a long time,” adding, “She wants to be out on the road doing her thing, while he is more chill. They clashed for a long time before they did anything about it.”
