‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’ and ‘Widows’ among this week’s new releases

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald — The sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them finds Jude Law, as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, hunting down his longtime rival, Gellert Grindelwald — played by Johnny Depp — after the wizard escapes custody. He enlists his former student and magizoologist Newt Scamander — portrayed by Eddie Redmayne — to assist. Ezra Miller and Zoë Kravitz also star. Rated PG-13.

Widows — Viola Davis stars in this film from 12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen about a grieving widow who recruits a group of women — played by Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki and Carrie Coon — to pull off a heist her late husband was planning. Colin Farrell, Brian Tyree Henry, Daniel Kaluuya, Robert Duvall, and Liam Neeson also star. Rated R.

Instant Family — Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne play a couple that finds themselves in over their heads when they decide to adopt three young children. Also starring Tig Notaro and Octavia Spencer. Rated PG-13.

A Private War — This drama, based on a true story stars Rosamund Pike as celebrated war correspondent Marie Colvin, who risked her life to give voice to the voiceless. Jamie Dornan and Stanley Tucci also star. Rated R.

Opening in limited release on Friday:

Green Book — Viggo Mortensen stars in this dramedy about a working-class Italian-American bouncer who becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist — played by Mahershala Ali — on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South. Rated PG-13.

At Eternity’s Gate — This biographical drama takes a look at the final days of painter Vincent van Gogh — played by Willem Dafoe. Rated PG-13.
