Peter Lindbergh/Warner Bros/Entertainment WeeklyA Star Is Born stars Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper grace the cover of Entertainment Weekly’s Fall Movie Preview.  In the video that accompanies the cover story, Gaga explains that the movie’s theme — how fame and love don’t always mix — is one she’s all too familiar with.

“This movie is a story that I know, that is a part of my real life,” Gaga says of the film, which Cooper also directed and co-wrote.  That’s why Cooper used her as a resource to make the film more authentic.

“Him spending time with me…asking me about my experiences growing up in the music industry and having that be a part of the film, it’s very special to me,” she says.

She adds, “I really just wanted to do what I know Bradley wanted to set out to do, which was to tell a true, authentic love story that also shows the arc of two very interesting characters and their love for one another, and the ups and downs of fame and the tragedy of it.”

Cooper says when he saw Gaga perform at a benefit show, he knew she was the right person to play Ally, the singer/songwriter who his character, Jackson Maine, mentors and falls in love with. Gaga says Cooper’s support is what allowed her to shine in her first major role.

“A long time ago my vocal teacher…told me, he said, ‘All it takes is for one person to believe in you,’” Gaga tells EW. “He said, ‘There could be a hundred people in the room and 99 don’t believe, but all it takes is one.’ And [Bradley] believed in me, and I’m very grateful for that.”

A Star Is Born, which is already generating award-show buzz, opens October 5.
