Ella Mai says Grammy nominations are like the cherry on top” of an “amazing year

ABC/Image Group LAElla Mai has always dreamed of winning a Grammy, and that dream may now come true.  She was nominated for two awards today: Song of the Year, and Best R&B Song, for “Boo’d Up.”

The 24-year-old singer heard the news announced by Michael Strahan as she appeared on Good Morning America in New York City.

“I really didn’t know before I got on stage. So when Michael said it, I was like, What? I didn’t know what to say,” Mai tells ABC Radio. “I’m just super, super grateful. The Grammys is something that, as any musician or artist, we look up to it from when we’re little and we dream of being nominated. So I’m just so grateful and I’ve had an amazing year, so this is like the cherry on top.”

Mai says even after hearing the news, it didn’t immediately register that her mutti-platinum single, “Boo’d Up,” had been recognized as one of the best of the year.

“I don’t think it’s actually hit me yet. It will,” she says. “I know it will sometime soon. Probably before the day. But yeah, it’s crazy.”

Mai lives in Los Angeles but was born in London, where her mom still lives. Nauturally, when she was informed about the nominations, Ella couldn’t wait to inform her mother.

“My mom’s at work so I’m not even sure if she knows yet. So I’m going to call her,” Mai says. “I have to try to figure out the time difference ’cause she’s still in England.”

Tune in to see if Ella’s Grammy dream comes true when the Grammy Awards air live from Los Angeles’ Staples Center Sunday, February 10, on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
