Jonathan MannionElla Mai’s breakout hit “Boo’d Up” is now certified four times platinum, and the singer from London recalls that it was during a surprise performance in New York City this past summer that she first realized the song was a massive hit.

That performance came in July, when Mai performed “Boo’d Up” as a special surprise guest during H.E.R.’s set on Chris Brown’s tour at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

”To be in New York in front of like 15,000 people, and have people just go absolutely crazy, just when she said my name, and then the song comes on, and then everyone was just singing every single word,” Mai tells ABC Radio. “It was just a moment where I realized, like, ‘Wow, this is really happening.”

Mai and H.E.R have since become good friends, and she’s featured on Mai’s self-titled album, which debuted this week at number five on the Billboard 200.

The “Trip” singer just announced The Debut Tour which will kick off in January in Europe, followed by the North American leg beginning in February. The American Music Awards nominee recently opened nine shows on Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic tour, and her tenth and final concert will be Friday in Los Angeles. She remembers she was in shock when Bruno asked her to join the tour.

“I was just so excited,” Mai recalls. “I couldn’t believe it. I’m such a big Bruno Mars fan and to be a part of something so fantastic…his live show is insane.”

Tickets for Mai’s The Debut Tour go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. local time on Ticketmaster.com.
