Ed Sheeran sets “Perfect” new chart record, inspires new ice cream flavor

Mark SurridgeIf it seems like Ed Sheeran‘s songs have been inescapable for the past year, well, you’re not wrong.

As Billboard notes, Ed’s single “Perfect” has just returned to the top 10, which means it’s spent 26 weeks — half a year — there, in total.  Meanwhile, Ed’s other smash, “Shape of You,” spent 33 weeks in the top 10, which is the all-time record.

So why is this notable?  Well, in the entire 59-year history of the Billboard chart, only 10 songs have managed to hang out in the top 10 for half a year or more — and two of them are by Ed.  He’s the only artist to have more than one super-long-lasting hit.

Other than “Shape of You” and “Perfect,” the other eight songs — and the number of weeks they hung on — are as follows:

32 weeks — “Closer,” The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey, 2016
32 weeks — “How Do I Live,” LeAnn Rimes,  1997
31 weeks — “Uptown Funk!,” Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars, 2005
30 weeks — “Smooth,” Santana feat. Rob Thomas, 1999
29 weeks — “Party Rock Anthem,” LMFAO feat. Lauren Bennett & GoonRock, 2011
28 weeks — “That’s What I Like,” Bruno Mars,  2017
28 weeks — “You Were Meant for Me”/”Foolish Games,” Jewel, 1997
26 weeks — “Truly Madly Deeply,” Savage Garden, 1998

In other Ed Sheeran news, Gelati, an ice cream parlor with a couple of Irish locations, has paid tribute to the singer — currently on tour in Ireland — by creating a ketchup-flavored ice cream.  Why?  Because Ed loves Heinz Ketchup so much, he has an image of the bottle tattooed on his arm.

We @gelati_icecream decided to welcome Ed Sheeran back to Ireland by creating his favourite flavour: Tomato ketchup!!” the store wrote on Instagram. They’re also offering free ketchup cones to fans attending Ed’s upcoming shows in Dublin.
