Pedro Gomes/RedfernsDemi Lovato performed her emotional new song, “Sober,” for the first time Sunday night at Rock in Rio Lisbon.

The singer played the piano as she sang the ballad’s honest lyrics about falling off the wagon after six years sober. The song apologizes to family, friends and fans for letting them down.

When she got to the words, “I’m sorry for the fans I lost,” the crowd erupted in cheers to show their support. Demi was noticeably overcome with emotion and her voice cracked as she sang the lyrics, “I wanna be a role model, but I’m only human.”

She posted about the experience on Twitter, writing, “Tonight I took the stage, a new person with a new life. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this journey. It will never be forgotten.”

Demi released “Sober” last week, calling it “my truth.” She has not released any other statement regarding her sobriety or lack thereof.

Meanwhile, Demi also had a fangirl moment on Instagram after finding out that Madonna posted a video of herself singing along to Demi’s song with Clean Bandit, “Solo.”

“THE QUEEN HERSELF SINGING SOLO!!!!!” Demi wrote. “What is life…?!?!!!! THANK YOU MADGE. and thank you @cleanbandit for letting me sing this song!!!”

“Solo” just hit number one on the U.K. charts.
