Dennis LeupoldDemi Lovato’s new album was inspired by a pop star who came before her: Christina Aguilera.

The singer tells People she grew up listening to Christina and looked to her 2002 Stripped album when creating her upcoming studio effort, Tell Me You Love Me.

“She was one of my idols growing up,” Demi says. “She still is. Her voice is incredible, and in Stripped you really got to hear that.”

Demi adds, “I think it was her breakout album that really transformed her into the icon that she is today. So that inspired me … she really inspired this album. I was even inspired by the black-and-white artwork!”

Just as Christina delved into some personal lyrics on Stripped, Demi is doing the same.

“I have been through a lot over the last year-and-a-half,” Demi says. “I’ve done a lot of growing and I wanted an album that best represented who I am.”

Tell Me You Love Me comes out September 29.
