Many big names who pCourtesy Dick Clark Productionserformed at Sunday night’s Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas skipped the red carpet — for example, Lorde, Celine Dion, Cher, Drake and Miley Cyrus were nowhere to be seen.  But there were plenty of folks who did stop to chat on the magenta carpet on their way into the show.

DJ Khaled was his usual positive self, talking about how delighted he was that “I’m the One,” his superstar collaboration with Justin Bieber, Quavo and others, had debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.  It was Khaled’s very first #1 hit. “Tears came to my eyes, I kissed my son, it’s just unbelievable,” he told ABC Radio.

Because so many winners were announced before the show, Machine Gun Kelly already knew that he and Camila Cabello had lost the Best Rap Collaboration award, but he said he didn’t mind — he was just happy to be at the event. “I’m just happy to be nominated for our first time [for “Bad Things”], I’m just happy a lot of my personal friends are performing and having a big moment,” he told ABC Radio. “It just seems like a burst of something new is happening.”

Kirstin Maldonado of Pentatonix recently released a solo single, but she’s not leaving the group.  However, she spoke about the fact that another member, Avi Kaplan, recently announced he was leaving to spend more time with friends and family.  “We’re all sad, we’re a giant family, so it’s definitely hard. It was a hard decision,” she said. “And it’ll definitely be hard to replace him.”

Hailee Steinfeld recalled that at the Billboard Music Awards two years ago, she was celebrating the success of the Pitch Perfect 2 soundtrack.  Now, she’s celebrating wrapping Pitch Perfect 3, as well as the fact that she’s now a recording artist with several hits under her belt.  She said that experience came in handy while filming PP3. “I was like, ‘I know how to work this stage now, I’ve done this a couple times!'” she laughed.

Chris Daughtry co-hosted the Billboard Music Awards red carpet pre-show and he told ABC Radio that he’s going into the studio on Monday to start recording the next Daughtry album. He also spoke about the death of Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, who died last week in an apparent suicide. “He was a huge inspiration to me…I was fortunate enough to meet him once and pick his brain a little bit,” he told ABC Radio. “It hit me hard…It’s a heartbreaking situation.”
